Mr Roland Poon is the Brave One; Not Me

Hello, everyone!

My last entry on 9 Reasons Why City Harvest Church Was the Devil To Me went a little viral… Really wasn’t expecting this. :O

Really like to thank everyone for taking the time to read and sending me very supportive messages. 🙂 Super flattered by those who took the time to write out their testimonials & experiences for me to read, I enjoyed reading each & every one! And when I saw messages from people who were encouraged by my post, made me feel like all the shit that went down in the past – went down for good reasons.

But, really… I’m not worthy of all the praise. Mr Roland Poon did so much more than me. 12 years ago, he actually went & voiced out what he felt wasn’t right. 12 years ago, I just sat among the congregation wondering why he did what he did.

I remember that service when they talked about Mr Roland Poon – honestly at that time I was thinking, “Why would someone do something like that to his spiritual family? Why would he hurt Sun Ho’s mission?”

Aiyo~ The more I think about the past, the more I wish I could back in time, look for myself and slap-slap-slap “Wake-the-fuck-up”! Such an idiot.

I didn’t even know what happened exactly. And I didn’t really care to find out. I just… Listened and followed in condemning him. If Mr Roland Poon is reading this… I’m so, so sorry. I was stupid.

Then they started using him as an example constantly. “Don’t be like Roland Poon!”
Oh, but then must forgive… “But as Christians…”

What I was told was that he didn’t have trust in his leaders (that child-like faith thing again) and when he wasn’t given answers, he decided to whistle-blow.

So I asked, “What’s wrong with questioning?”

Aaaaand, you guessed it. Rebuked again. -_-

So really, without Mr Roland Poon, probably all that not-so-pleasant stuff would’ve still happened without any bit of justice served. He doesn’t even know who I am – but if I could ever say something to him, it’ll be to thank him immensely for waking me up.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you, Mr Roland Poon.

The truth I have is limited to my own experience, perspective and understanding – but it’s my bit of truth nonetheless and thank you all for letting me share it with you.

And even more thankful that I’ve touched people with my story.

Okay – had a long day… Before heading back to the office tomorrow, shall relax with some Running Man! Woohoo!

XOXO,
Gera.

  1. Hey there! I think that your posts about City Harvest are incredibly brave and honest and I can’t help but marvel at your attitude. I appreciate how you were able to question and look for deeper meaning in church practices. I’ve been going to church for all my life (thats 19 years, not a lot I know haha) but I always questioned the existence of God and certain practices done by the church and at one point I thought my church was a cult (for real) so I just wanted to encourage you to keep fighting and searching for the truth. Know that God is with you because despite how much I questioned and sought other religions in favour of christianity, God still kept loving me and I finally made it as a christian when I studied the bible and decided to get baptised. I hope one day you are able to share about a church that teaches the right doctrine and gives you the spiritual stability you need:)

      1. Today many clever guys use Jesus name to make money by using “direct sale ” system to bring in new innocent people to so call church.

  2. Great job to what Roland Poon was doing! Like Roland Poon, I do not fear death or persecution to spread the true words and doctrines of the Living God. It is not an easy task finding the right church which has its heart truly set towards God and his will. Even up till now, I am still searching. What is most important is not the physical church, but the true ‘church’ living inside us!

  3. What you write brings back many memories of what I also experienced in a cult here in Singapore. People who questioned what was going on would be tormented (group pressure sessions that were called ‘being in the hot seat’. If those sessions did not get the heretics back in line, they would be cast out. Those who remained would be praised as the special enlightened people, anyone outside of the group would be ridiculed as shallow and dumb.
But there is justice, in the five years after I got out, many of those who stayed on, including the founding leaders, ended up bankrupt.
Sadly some have regrouped to continue under a different name, here in Singapore, in Australia and elsewhere, which is one reason why I do what I can to warn people that there are still cults out there, in the form of companies and churches, unbeknownst to most people, and surprisingly even in places like Singapore with a well-educated population and a reputation of being corruption-free.
There are ways to protect yourself.
    As the Buddha is quoted as saying;
    “Believe nothing
No matter where you read it
    Or who said it
Not even if I have said it
Unless it agrees with your own reason
    And your own common sense.”

Trust your instincts and be careful out there!

  6. Once again well written blog and good reflection of what’s really going on. Appreciate your candor. Perhaps in all it’s purity, they forgot the old adage of money being the root of all evil! Keep it up!
